Case Study — End-use studies help prepare for electrification
Objectives
A gas and electric utility aimed to understand electrification plans and preferences among both residential and commercial customers. The study focused on the potential shift from natural gas to electricity for home heating and explored the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) and equipment.
Bellomy Approach
An end-use study was conducted to survey residential and commercial customers, gathering data on their current usage and plans related to electrification.
Outcomes and Insights:
Residential Heating Preferences
Just over half of residential customers currently use natural gas for home heating. Among these, only a minority expressed a willingness to switch to electric heating when their equipment needs replacement, indicating a moderate openness to electrification.
Adoption of Electric Equipment
While only 1% of residential customers currently own an EV, there is a notable adoption of electric lawn equipment, with over 25% using electric weed eaters and leaf blowers. This suggests a growing comfort with electrification in smaller-scale applications.
Commercial Vehicle Electrification
Most commercial customers surveyed manage small fleets (fewer than 10 vehicles). Few have electrified at least half of their fleet. However, among those who have begun the transition, there is interest in fully electrifying their fleets by 2032, revealing a long-term commitment to vehicle electrification.
