Balancing Green Energy and the Bottom Line
Aligning Utility Goals with Ratepayer Realities
Challenge
A utility aimed to understand customer perceptions of its energy mix and assess their expectation and attitudes toward selecting energy solutions and the integration of renewable energy sources. The focus was on assessing customer knowledge and attitudes toward cost implications.
Solution
Focus groups were conducted with utility customers to discuss their understanding of the energy mix and gather insights into their preferences and expectations.
Results
Overestimation of Renewables
Many customers overestimated the proportion of renewable energy sources in the utility’s mix. Upon learning the actual breakdown, there was a clear desire to increase the share of renewables.
Mixed Cost Perceptions
Customers held varied views on the cost implications of increasing renewable energy. Some believed that renewables like solar, wind, and hydro should lower bills since these sources are perceived as "free" compared to others. Meanwhile, other customers anticipated long-term savings but recognized that initial infrastructure investments might lead to higher rates in the short term.
My favorite feature is the ability to apply custom topics from one dataset to another. Since my industry is such a unique space, this feature allows me to have a starting point for all projects and saves me considerable time. For the first time last year, we presented powerful content to business stakeholders to help improve our product offerings.
